Gillingham and Shaftesbury Show

August 2002 saw the 66th annual Gillingham and Shaftesbury Agricultural Show take place at its regular location mid-way between the two towns, at Motcombe Turnpike. A one-day agricultural show attracting trade stands from across the county (and beyond) it was also a scene of intense competition – whether that be amongst growers of monstrous sized vegetables, a myriad of horse and pony classes or in the more sedate (but no less serious) cattle classes. The show was also a chance for the farming community to re-assert all that is positive in agriculture after what had been a difficult previous year (the country's herds were decimated by a disease epidemic) and in the face of ever increasing economic pressures.
