Wimborne in Bloom

From the end of July to the start of August towns across the country vie with each other to win the coveted prizes for best floral displays in Southern England. Lampposts, railings, roadsides and even bus stops are adorned with decorative plants and flowers, creating a garden like atmosphere throughout each town. The scenes shown here were taken in Wimborne Minster in 2002, around the date of the judging for the Southern England in Bloom competition for that year. All the hard work put in by the volunteers and townsfolk paid off – Wimborne wins the Small Town category of the competition for that year.

Wimborne also won the Small Town category in the Southern England in Bloom competition in 2003, so was prevented from entering the same category again in 2004 – instead having to enter the Champion of Champions category – against all other category winners! To the great delight of the committee they achieved Gold – overall winners of South and South-East in Bloom. This was rounded off by achieving Silver Gilt in the Small Town category for the Britain in Bloom competition later that same year.
